Early Dental Visits for Kids

The American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both recommend that every child have a dental screening by age 1 or when their first tooth erupts (whichever comes first.) These early visits serve multiple purposes, including:

  • Screening for conditions that should be corrected as early as possible
  • Monitoring oral development and anatomy
  • Decreasing the risk of potential dental emergencies
  • Preventing dental phobia and anxiety, by establishing a non-threatening association with the dental care environment
  • Pediatric oral hygiene and nutritional counseling for caregivers
  • Decreasing speech delays or atypical orofacial development

Dr. Hu can see your child as young as a few days old. Especially when it comes to screening for and treating tongue or lip ties. We offer laser frenectomy services in our office for newborns as well as older children.

If your child is already much older, it’s not too late to get a start on their preventative care!

What to Expect

When you arrive, our front office team will meet with you to get you checked in, fill out any necessary paperwork, and answer any questions you may have.

After we finish processing your information, we’ll escort you to our clinical area where you’ll meet Dr. Hu and then work with our assistant or hygienist. After a few moments and any cleanings or X-rays, Dr. Hu will come back to perform a thorough examination and discuss any findings or treatments that are necessary.

Some of the things Dr. Hu will want to check for include:

  • Eruption patterns
  • Tongue or lip ties
  • Impacted or missing teeth
  • Thumb, finger, or pacifier sucking habits
  • Jaw growth and anatomy
  • Gum and tooth health
  • Sleep irregularities

What if My Child Has Cavities?

If your child does require care, Dr. Hu can walk you through the process and discuss options such as sedation to keep your little one comfortable. Our care team will also review an itemized treatment plan that lists each procedure and applicable fees.

Our goal is to provide prevention-based strategies that reduce your child’s need for treatment in the future. To do so, Dr. Hu suggests a checkup every six months, regardless of your child’s age.
