Pediatric Preventative Care

Did you know that most dental problems—from tooth decay and gum disease to dental emergencies—are preventable? With a great prevention-focused strategy, you can help your child reduce their risk of tooth loss or painful toothaches as they grow up.

Professional Cleanings Every Six Months

We recommend a dental cleaning for all children twice a year. As soon as your little one is comfortable sitting in the dental chair, we’ll gradually progress to these visits at their own pace. Our hygienist will remove plaque buildup, polish your child’s teeth, and educate them one-on-one about how to properly brush and floss at home each day.

Exams and Digital X-rays

Early intervention allows us to stop pediatric dental problems while they’re smaller and easier to correct. By performing routine exams every six months, Dr. Hu is able to identify changes in your child’s smile that may need to be addressed. In some cases, those concerns are 100% reversible.

Dr. Hu will also use digital X-rays to assess your child’s developing anatomy, unerupted teeth, perform orthodontic consultations or wisdom teeth exams, and screen for cavities. These images are extremely safe and an essential part of providing quality pediatric care.

Dental Sealants

Around age 6, your child will get a set of permanent adult molars that erupt in the back of their mouth. Another set erupts around age 12, give or take a year or so. These teeth have especially deep grooves and pits on their chewing surfaces, making them more susceptible to decay. Especially since these fissures may be too narrow for a toothbrush bristle to clean. To repel acids and cavity-causing bacteria, we can place a protective sealant over these areas.

Dental sealants are like a thin, BPA-free plastic coating. They essentially seal out food particles and plaque, while creating a smoother surface that you can clean with a toothbrush. Unlike fillings, sealants don’t require any numbing. They can be applied in as quickly as a couple of minutes by Dr. Hu or our Registered Dental Hygienist.

Mouth Guards for Bruxism

Chronic teeth clenching and grinding can damage your child’s teeth, jaws, and cause headache symptoms. A specially-fitted mouthguard can help combat tooth wear to keep their smile healthy.

Many children exhibit bruxism (clenching and grinding) as a side-effect of sleeping disorders. Dr. Hu routinely screens for sleep problems—including difficulty concentrating, pronounced oral anatomy, and bedwetting—and will recommend sleep referrals as necessary.

Sports Mouthguards

Is your child or teen involved in athletics or individual sports where traumatic injuries are common? Investing in a sports mouthguard can be one of the smartest pieces of “insurance” you ever buy. These protective oral appliances are designed to reduce soft tissue lacerations, knocked-out teeth, and even lower the risk of a concussion. Plus, they’re more effective (and comfortable) than over-the-counter “boil and bite” mouthguard designs. We can also match them to your child’s jersey colors!

Comfort Amenities for Kids

Trips to the dentist should be fun. We offer various flavors of tooth polish for your child to choose from. We also have a TV in our operatory, so your little one can watch their favorite show and tune everything else out that’s going on around them. We also use noise-cancelling headphones, comfy blankets, and offer fun prizes at the end of your child’s visit.

Ask About Our In-Office Membership Plan

Not everyone has dental insurance, but every family deserves affordable oral health care. Our Glendora pediatric dentist offers a private in-house membership program where families can access the care their child needs at affordable prices. Third party financing plans are also available.
